Dog Friendly Coffee Shops in Durban

Friday, 14 September 2018
If you don’t already know by my Instagram stories, I love dogs and I love coffee. And wherever I go, Benji goes so together we have discovered a few of our favourite pet friendly coffee shops in Durban that we couldn’t wait to share with you. Here is a list of our go to coffee shops where you will always find us. Get your reusable coffee cups and leads ready!

  • Home Bru Graft Cafe
Retail 12 Beacon Rock, 21 Lighthouse Road, Umhlanga Rocks, Durban, 4320, South Africa
    Monday – Friday 6am to 5pm
This little gem is owned by a couple that have two Jack Russell’s of their own, so they love having furry friends pop in! What makes this place unique is their beautiful work spaces, discretely tucked away behind the coffee shop that are peaceful, quiet and perfect for remote workers who need a place to get sh*t done. You can also rent a meeting room if you freelance but need somewhere more professional to meet clients. Their concept is brilliant and it works perfectly having a coffee shop on the premises so you can order cappuccinos straight to your desk! Benji and I pop by for pleasure rather than work, so we often take full advantage of their outside area and the great coffee (sometimes with a side of pancakes!)
  • African Roots
6-8 Lagoon Dr, Umhlanga, 4320, South Africa
    Monday - Saturday 7am to 6pm
Sundays and Public Holidays - 9am to 4pm
I mentioned African Roots Coffee in our dog friendly brunch spots in Durban review, but we just love this little spot so much and their coffee is consistently good. It is small and cosy but all (good) dogs are welcome here. Dogs are even given their own water bowl, so they can enjoy a drink while you do.
  • Khuluma
6 Station Drive, Durban 4001, South Africa
    Monday - Friday 6:30am to 4:00pm
    Saturday – Sunday 7am to 1pm
There is a new coffee shop on the block! Khuluma might be new but they are at the top of the list of places to go for a good coffee in my opinion. It has a laid-back, industrial vibe with pops of unexpected pink. Make sure you visit Momenti Artisan Gelato next door for life changing ice cream. They even have vegan options!
  • Prodigy
7 Tetford Circle, Umhlanga, Durban, South Africa
This has to be one of my favourite coffee shops in Durban, design wise. Located next door to the new SHF, Prodigy exudes modern style with a focus on good coffee. This spot is the go to place if you want to escape the rest of the world, it feels like a little oasis.
  • Seattle Coffee
5 Mackuertan Ave, Virginia Circle, Durban, South Africa
There are several Seattle coffee shops around Durban now but our go to place for an almond milk, ice coffee is the Seattle Coffee shop at Virginia Circle, in Durban North. We often stop here first then head to the Virginia field so Benji can run around and I can get my morning caffeine fix. Win win.
  • Daily Dose
4 Durban View Road, Umhlanga Rocks, 4156, South Africa
If you want to know where all the dogs are at 6am during the week, it’s here along with their runner / walker / early bird owners (accept me, I am permanently exhausted pigeon). This is generally our first stop in the morning if Benji and I are going for a stroll on Umhlanga’s Promenade. Coffee is served from a little trailer and I love this about Daily Dose. It has a Durban, beach, laid back vibe and is all about serving good coffee. They apparently have the exclusive rights to Father Coffee beans in KZN which helps set them apart with a more designative taste. And it’s good! They have even started using recyclable cups and don’t give you plastic lids unless you ask for it, which is such a great initiative. The baristas always treat you with a smile and are so welcoming. How they are this happy so early in the morning is still a mystery to me.
  • Rox Coffee
    Monday – Sunday 6am to 6am
Umhlanga Promenade, to the left of the pier
If you are walking from Bronze beach to the lighthouse on Umhlanga promenade and need a little pick me up, then stop at Rox Coffee. I always order their almond milk, ice coffee. Especially with summer approaching, trust me and try one! It is my summer go to drink. And for the doggies, they have free dog biscuits which Benji loves and I think is just the sweetest gesture.
  • Columbo Coffee
59 Adelaide Tambo Dr, Durban North, 4051, South Africa
    Monday – Friday 6am to 5pm
    Saturday – Sunday 7am to 1pm
This coffee shop is almost hidden from the street so you may have passed it without knowing it was there. The do a great flat white but the only downside is they don’t do almond milk / soya or any other alternative, so I don’t go here as much as I would like to. I wish someone would start using oat milk. One day!
If you know any other dog mammas, share this post with them and say hi if you see us. We love meeting you out on our adventures through the city!
